I’ve come to realize that there are many other people and organizations who are much better informed and coherent than I could ever hope to be. Therefore, within the realm of my personal desire spread fact and open minds, I will leave it to the experts.
I’m going to use this space to support my ideas through the work of others. There is so much excellent content out there, it just doesn’t make sense to try to generate my own. I’d rather provide (incredibly limited) exposure to those who would do a much better job.
With that said, here is my first offering. This short video should be required viewing by everyone. It’s as simple as that. While it focuses somewhat on the issue of science education versus religious belief in schools, it is a coherent explanation of why and how science matters.

Wait, what’s the point of this? Look, we need to straighten something out; right now, the "Many people" the video refers to (around 1:50) are NOT "many". The people who believe that science is junk, that scientists are social activists and that Judea-Christian biblical beliefs are scientific are a DISTINCT minority in our society.
The problem, for the best part of the last decade, was that one of this minority was the President of the richest and most powerful country on the earth. All of a sudden, people with no credibility or visibility, beyond their own meetings or conventions, had a mouth piece. THE mouth piece, you could argue. The defeated VP nominee in 2008 was a part of this movement ? please note the word, ?defeated?.
That’s all over now. The people selected by the incoming President to lead scientific matters are the Nobel Laureates. So, why spend the time to produce movies like this? Surely you realize it?s a ?preach to the converted? type of message. I hope it?s the only 10 minute video the scientific community wastes on this topic.
David,
If you remove the religious connotation of this stuff; I think the first half of the video has a lot of relevance to people today.
Take a look at the "Framework vs No Framework" argument many programmers have. Or the "Mac vs PC" argument. Or the "ColdFusion is Dead; no its not" threads.
A lot of people make decisions based on personal bias without considering or evaluating facts.
This video was made, perhaps, in response to the political struggles of the past few years regarding teaching evolution in schools… but that’s not the point. The message is politically agnostic. The message is about thinking critically and using our best methods to arrive at an objective view of reality.
95-96% of Americans believe in at least some sort of god force. This is a direct indication that we defer to primitive, magical thinking on at least some levels. These people are the video’s audience. And unfortunately, the people who should see this video, and the countless others like it, probably won’t.
