Flex Debugging Stopped Working – How to Fix

About a week ago, when I upgraded to Firefox 3 from Firefox 2, Flex Builder debugging completely stopped working without a blip on the Flex Builder radar. Trying to debug an app resulted in nothing out of the ordinary except that no debugging information was displayed. Breakpoints were ignored without a peep. Frustration!

I have no idea if the upgrade to Firefox 3 caused this problem, but I am strongly suspicious. Here’s how to go about fixing it. Change your freakin’ browser.

Seriously, in Flex Builder, go to

Window > Preferences > General > Web Browser

Change your browser to Internet Explorer. Then go ahead and attempt a debug session. You may or may not be asked to download the Debug version of the Flash Player. I was asked to do this. No big deal. Download it and install it and your debugging will work once again.

Firefox is failing me more and more often. I’ve upgraded IE to 8 beta and it works great. It’s got everything except 2 extensions for a feature (gestures) and an app (SiteBar) that I use quite often.

  • There is a documented bug about Flex Debugging not working in FF3. I was able to fix it by disabling one of my plugins. I forget what I googled, but there is quite a long thread attached to one of the bugs in the public Flex bugbase.
