The World’s Best Orange Julius Recipe

I love the classic Orange Julius drink but there are no Orange Julius stores anywhere nearby. So I had no choice but to create the World’s Best Home Made Orange Julius recipe.

Follow these directions to create a perfect Orange Julius in your own home in about 5 minutes. I have perfected this recipe after trying many slight variations and I think I’ve got it close to where it needs to be.

All you need is a blender and these ingredients:

  • 1/2 tray of Ice (8 large cubes)
  • 1 1/4 cup of Orange Juice
  • 3/4 cup of Water
  • 1/4 cup granular Sugar
  • 3 TBS Egg Whites (from a carton)
  • 1 tsp Vanilla Extract

Follow these directions exactly for the best results.

  1. Crush Ice in blender until impossible. After a minute or two, the ice will most likely get stuck and can’t be crushed any more, at least with my blender.
  2. Add Orange Juice and Sugar to partially crushed Ice. Blend until smooth.
  3. Add remainder and blend until frothy (3-4 minutes).  The level of liquid will actually rise the more you blend.  I believe it’s due to the egg whites capturing air.

Taste it! It’s awesome.  My 7 year-old son loves it, and so do I.  If you let it sit in the blender, it will separate. Just give it a spin to mix it up again.

Notes on ingredients:

I’ve tried various amounts of ice, and BY FAR 8 cubes is best. Strangely it really does make a difference. This drink is an emulsion. If you use more ice, your drink will separate much more quickly, and ultimately not be as thick.

You can get the egg whites in the dairy section of your supermarket. It’s a liquid that comes in a little carton that lasts a long time. This adds the all important froth.

this is the exact brand I use

I’ve found that the amount of sugar needs to be pretty precise. Exactly 1/4 cup (or a smidgen less) will work. Too little and the drink will be too tangy, too much and it will be too sweet for most people. The sugar needs to just balance the orange juice bite.

Adding vanilla ice-cream to this recipe will mysteriously remove all the flavor! I thought that adding a large scoop of vanilla ice-cream would create a creamsicle drink, but strangely it turned the drink flavorless. It could have just been my brand of ice cream though… who knows?

Have fun!

Man, I’m hooked on this stuff now. I make at about 2 times a week. I just leave the blender on the counter now and don’t pack it up.

Well I lost the old recipe I got off the internet several years ago and stumbled across this one, which is by far the best! It reminds me of those halycon days in college and going to the mall to have an "Orange Julius" and watch the girls go by…

Can you Use milk instead of water?

  • Steve

Wow, I have not tried using milk instead of water. That’s not a bad idea. I think I will give it a try. I will tell you that I have since tried adding fruit punch instead of orange juice and I didn’t like it as much.

I still make this recipe about once a week and I still love it.

This is the recipe I have been looking for, BUT instead of the egg whites in the carton, I have discovered that you can use powdered egg whites or as it’s called in the cake decorating section of Michael’s crafts or even Walmart, meringue powder. About 2 tablespoons is what you need and it will provide the froth and keep

  • Steve

Thanks for the tip about the powder. I will have to look for that.

Thanks so much for the care and precise instructions !!
I, too, am one of those seeking to connect with an old
favorite from the past, and no kiosks to be found in my
area… It’s nice when you’re able to visit with an old friend !
… *smile* … Thank you, again!

YUM!! I had a major craving for an Orange Julius and every attempt I’ve ever made to make one just wasn’t "it". THANK YOU for sharing your perfect recipe!!!!!

This recipe NAILS the flavor! Excellent!! Best OJulius recipe I’ve tried. And the milk DOES work, just did it. If you’re fortunate to have a Vita-Mix, try using 3 small peeled oranges,
instead of OJ. (Regular blender won’t pulverize the oranges well enough.) Adds even more substance! Thank you for sharing the perfect recipe! You just made our morning!

I love this recipe but I use more ice. I drink about 5 a day now.

I used tis recipe in a spree of experimenting with my blender. this was the best Orange Julius recipe I tried and I will look no further… WOW! I used normal egg whites (2 eggs) and it worked perfectly!
    Thanks for sharing your genius!

Great recipe. Instead of granular sugar I use 1/2 cup powdered sugar. This is without a doubt the best recipe online. Thank you
