Marvel Comics Civil War and Stamford, CT

I used to collect comic books.  I think that the first comics that I bought as a kid cost about $.50.  I really collected them during the time when they were about $.60 to $.75.  I stopped buying comics when they got to about $1.50 per book.

I didn’t buy them all… just the ones that really interested me.  I liked Spiderman, Daredevil, Wolverine, the X-Men, Spawn, TMNT, and a few other random titles.  But that was about it.  Suddenly I find myself buying comic books again.

<<—– And here’s why…

Notice that smoldering highway sign.  Yep, “Stamford, Connecticut”.  That’s where I live.  Marvel is hyping up a huge summer event simply called “Civil War” which appears to build upon storylines originally conceived in The Uncanny X-Men, mutant registration.  In this case, however, there is a push to register all super-heros as living Weapons of Mass Destruction.

The reason?  The Stamford Massacre.  Apparently a super-hero reality show goes terribly wrong while filming in Stamford.  A major portion of the city and many, many lives are lost in a catastrophic explosion.

This just sounds too incredibly interesting to leave alone.  So I just returned from a comic book shop where I picked up the first two Amazing Spider-man books that kick off the story.  The entire story will be told throughout the summer while spanning something like 40+ books.  As before, I won’t buy them all… only the ones I really like.

The New Avengers: The Illuminati one-shot appears to be the official start of the story… but it is sold out everywhere.  Apparently, a second printing is planned.

Some people say that the story really starts in Amazing Spider-man #529, which is already SOLD OUT everywhere and into its second printing.  A third printing is planned.  Not only does the story start here, but Spidey gets a NEW COSTUME, which is always a reason for high demand.

If you’d like to learn more about Civil War, check the Wikipedia article.  It also clearly outlines which books are part of the story.
