Television: The New Star of Netflix.com

Movies…. bah!  Television is the new king over at Netflix for me.  My latest pleasure has been Rome, the HBO series.  Absolutely amazing and absorbing stuff.  I wish it could go on and on.  Watching each new episode is like returning to read a few more chapters of a really good book.

The best part about Rome is that, in general, it really happened.  That just makes it all the more incredible.  This series has opened my eyes to a period in history that I have thus far avoided.  After the final episode, I went online to read more about the life of Gaius Julius Caesar.  In doing so, a ton of fragmented knowledge has come together for me.  I am completely stunned at how this man still influences us every day even 2000 years after his death.

The DVD series also has an amazing viewing mode called “All Roads Lead to Rome” that you can turn on or off as you like.  It reminds me of VH1′s pop-up videos.  As you watch, little info boxes will pop up whenever something is mentioned that the viewer would not necessarily know.  This feature is so interesting that it begs a re-watching of the entire series.

HBO has the best and most original programming out there. If you haven’t seen it yet, I recommend Deadwood. It’s tough to get into (like all HBO shows, I think), but well worth sticking with.
