Mac People are the Southerners of Computers

I just realized this analogy:

Mac People are to PC People as Southerners are to Northerners

Or… in analogy shorthand:

Mac People : PC People  :: Southerners : Northerners

Most people from New England have had a friend or acquaintence from the South.  We’ve all been there.  They just WON’T SHUT UP about it.  People who have moved to the North (or are visiting) from the South are always like “BLAH BLAH Ya’ll BLAH BLAH.  We do it this way, ya’ll do it wrong, BLAH BLAH”.  We’ve all heard this and we all feel the exact same way.  WHO CARES?  JUST SHUT UP ALREADY!

People from the South believe that the Civil War is still something that anyone cares about.  Well, maybe they’re right.  But it turns out that the only people who care are FROM THE SOUTH.  Everyone else has forgotten about it.  Southerners like to keep it going on another level… sort of a Social Civil War.  They think that everyone always considers North vs. South on every issue, when the fact remains that people in the North don’t EVER give it a second thought.  No wait… they don’t even give it a first thought.

(Have you EVER seen a “Proud to be a Northerner” t-shirt?  No.  Exactly.)

To stretch this analogy even further, people in the North think about the South in exactly the same way that the United States thinks about Canada… and that is… not at all.  To quote a comedian I once heard, Canada is like our attic.  We forget it’s up there.  Then, every once and while we’re like… “Hey, there’s stuff up here!  Wow, check this out!”  But I digress.

To get back to the point, I have randomly come across countless videos documenting… get this… how quickly a Macintosh boots up.  Go ahead, rub your eyes all you want, you just read exactly what you think you read.  These Mac geeks actually spend time planning and taking videos of how fast their computers boot up.  They do this, among other reasons… to show us PC users how great their little society is.  And now I come full circle when I say… PC USERS DON’T FRIGGIN CARE!

(Have you EVER seen a “Made on a PC” icon?  No.  Exactly.)

PC Users are the Northerners to Mac Users.  You slow-talking uber-geeks (am I addressing Southerners or Mac users, you decide)… listen up.  We don’t EVER think about you.  You do not register on our radar, so stop thinking that you do.  You have nothing to prove so stop trying to continually prove it.

We just don’t care.

You should pay attention to the recent videos more… They’re not comparing a PC to a MAC – they’re comparing a Mac to a Mac!

The recent videos that have hit the net, which I assume got you on this rant, are comparing OS X running on a G5 to OS X running on an Intel processor. It’s just benchmarking man, nothing else.

As far as comparing Mac users to Southerners? As a Mac user – who cares? Zealots are zealots no matter which platform you use. And since I think marketshare does have an affect on the ratio of PC to Mac users – there are probably WAY more PC zealots than there are Mac zealots.

It doesn’t have to do with the “Mac Society”. It’s just about enjoying an experience. You ever meet someone who likes a product they use? Whether its a car, a video game, a computer, whatever… people like to talk about the things they like. They also like to share that with other people.

[Sidenote: this comment character limit is ridiculous.... ] [My post continued...]

If I enjoy using a Mac and don’t enjoy using a PC(which isn’t neccessarily the case) It seems quite logical that I might want to share my experience with you, in the case that we agree. If you use a PC and find you like a Mac more after I shared my experience – that’s cool. If you don’t – thats cool too. It’s your choice.

The immaturity which surrounds this type of “sharing” by zealots is the real issue. My thing is better than yours! Blue is better than Red! Blah blah blah. It’s pointless and most often either preaching to the choir or trolling.

I’ll stand by my opinion that I enjoy using a OS X and Windows for different tasks and to use specific pieces of software that I like. Not so much with PC Hardware, but I do enjoy using and working with Apple hardware. Does it matter to you? You tell me.

Steve, I totally agree….they are a cult! MAC users can do “anything a PC can do” and “it’s so easy to use”…until it actually comes time to do it. I worked with a guy who was always trumping his MAC notebook and he nearly had me convinced that I should get one..until I started asking a few questions….

“So I can EVERYTHING on the MAC that I can do on the PC?”.
    “YES”.
“All my Web Development tools, source control, etc”
“Yes. But you’ll probably have to buy an emulator. And certain things won’t work the same. The emulators aren’t that stable”.

Hmmmm, ok, so the answer is really “NO”. BUT it looks cool, and I can edit, ummm, photos really good, and there’s no BSOD. All at a premium, of course – they cost more.

Yep, Steve, I agree with you. MAC’s are SO insignificant, that people don’t even bother writing viruses for them! ’nuff said.

  • Where exactly do linux users fit in?

    I’d rather deal w/ mac users anyday….

  • David

I feel Linux people are colorblind MAC users. They are just as fanatical, and they get excited about the littlest of things. I had a guy show me how he could copy his entire hard drive to an external disk on Linux, with a single mouse click. BFD! I have a Maxtor, and all it takes is pressing one button!
